We Are A Space of Grace!

Space of Grace

At Beyond Yoga, you do not have to be an advanced yogi to begin your yoga practice!  We love having beginners, and we welcome those that have never set foot in a studio.  It is our heart’s desire that our “space of grace” minister to your physical AND spiritual needs.

We believe your time on the mat is a sacred place to connect with God and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your body and your heart as we surrender our lives to Him.  Just as becoming flexible on the mat is a journey and a process, so is His work in each of us.  Layer by layer, we uncover the tight, unsurrendered places of our body and with each movement on the mat, we can go a little deeper.

And such is the work of the Holy Spirit as He pursues us continually.  Layer by layer of our hearts He uncovers, and deeper and deeper He goes in loving us, and us becoming known.

With that said, as a beginner, most have no idea what to expect and can be a little anxious or intimidated before their first class!  Here are some practical beginner tips that will be helpful as you begin your yoga journey.

1. What to Wear

Shoes: Yoga is most often done barefoot. You will occasionally see people with some kind of sock or shoe, but it’s usually due to an injury or medical condition. This is usually welcome news for people who are tired of carrying around an extra pair of shoes for the gym.

Pants: There are many different styles of yoga pants, but you don’t have to run out and buy a special pair before your very first class. Any comfortable exercise pants or shorts will do. After a few classes, you may feel like you wish the pants you have were shorter/longer/looser/higher waisted/not falling down every time you stretch up. That’s a good time to go shopping. Always avoid practicing in pants that don’t stretch, like jeans.

Tops: A shirt that is a little bit fitted works best.

A big baggy t-shirt is not great since it will probably slide down every time you bend over. And you’re going to be doing a lot of bending over. Sleeveless tops are popular since they allow freedom of movement in the arms and shoulders. Wear whatever kind of bra you prefer for exercising.
